I am very excited for this week. It is going to be a week of discovery and learning what can be done in a virtual environment. The map we will be working with is called the World of Humanities. I will be talking more about it at the start of class. Your only task is exploration and a little team work. I am hoping to have a couple teachers come in and see what we are doing because I believe this is what educational tech is all about. I hope you have fun with it.
I think I should listen to what asked and return to the old Quarter 3 blog/vlog style. Vlogs will again count as 2 blogs.
This week's blogs:
At this point in the school year (and really High School) you probably have figured out that I have high expectations for you. It may feel like IT gives fairly easy grades and many of you have said that the class asks the most consistent work out of you. However, I am not sure you realize how far you have come. A lot of what you are learning you don't see because you are in the middle of learning/using the information. I can tell you, watching you grow and learn has been incredible. You are doing more than I think you realize.
As simple as Minecraft is, what have already learned is this:
Increased eye-hand coordination. Even the most untrained in this method of movement has already easily mastered it. I wish you could see what your brain is doing
Huge collaborative and communicative improvements. You miss half the conversations that are going on while you are task focused, but let me tell you, this is a HUGE change. It is very impressive
Problem solving through the roof. You should see how fast you organize your groups and plan solutions. It is just amazing.
All of this with a little simple game. Bravo!
This wee we will try a little fun. I think we will attempt both the obstacle course (more eye-hand and spacial awareness) and the Hunger Games (societal and communication skills). I am really looking forward to this.
A single blog this week:
Digital Citizenship is made of Nine Elements (Click HERE for a list). Which of the nine do you see the most involved with a game like Minecraft and why is that important?
This is it, the last Quarter in a great year. I think we are going to have some fun for the next couple months. I have some interesting ideas and I hope you look at them with an open mind and try to have some fun.
The first unit of the Quarter will be dealing with Minecraft. You knew it was coming. Some of you are excited (Emad) and some of you aren't (Nada). This is good. If you love everything we do then you don't see technology for what it really is. You need to know that somethings seem good to you and bad to others. It's the same argument with Apple vs Windows. You may not like a thing, but that doesn't make it bad. It's an opinion and you should have them. I don't expect you to like everything we do, but I only challenge you to try (you never know, you might learn that you like it).
So, we are going to use Minecraft as a tool. Yes, it is a game but it has incredible value. We are going to use this 3D interactive, creative environment to deal with Digital Citizenship. We are going to work together, help each other, and build together. That is something that is incredibly difficult to teach and I have found that being immersed in an environment makes it so much more fun.
The first week will be learning the system. You will be working through a tutorial world and an exploratory world. This will hopefully give you comfort in the system. After that we will look into some more complex builds, and even some coding (really, who doesn't want to learn how to make a computer run?). It should be great fun.
BUT FIRST! (no Chris, no selfie)...what we need to do is try something interesting. I am planning on using Minecraft as a tool for Digital Citizenship, so maybe we should look at that a little first. What we need to do is know the difference between your Digital Persona versus your Real Life persona. Some people are the same in both places, some are not (more common these days). So, who are you?

Three blogs on your return, however, there is a change...you can do 3 blogs now or 2 blogs and 1 vlog...
What Myers - Briggs personality type are you? Are the results accurate?

Comment on the video below (or from the folder)...what are your expectations for the unit?
