I am very excited to be able to to present a new project to you all. In case I never mentioned it when I took my first technology class ever (Grade 7 for me, so 1990!) we had a project based on the stock market also. I learned a lot from it and really started seeing the value of computers outside of gaming, yes we had computer games back then. When we did the stock project though we had to get the news papers, actual paper, and look up all of our stocks. Then we had to type them into the spreadsheet application (way before Office and Excel). We even had to make our own graphs. Nasty but fun at the same time.
Lucky you, since you have wonderful tools available. Google Finance and Google Docs Spreadsheet are going to allow you to track and monitor your stocks with a great deal of ease. We are going to be following the stocks for a long time (probably until the end of Quarter!) in order to get good data. That means that we will be doing other work as this project continues to run.
The documents are all in the dropbox but will be edited as we go. I got these from a friend who sent me a link. I didn't make this assignment up. It's all the same in the long run. Basically, to begin you will decide what stocks you are going to want to buy. You will be given a starting amount of money and will buy stocks based on rules found in the assignment. For the first few days we will be setting up our spreadsheets (I saw we because I plan on doing this with you). After that we will checking our stocks daily but filling in forms on Tuesdays (might change this but we will see). At the end of the chosen time we will see who has the gained the most (or lost the most).
Like I said at the beginning, I am really excited to be able to run this project (kind of full circle for me technology-wise) and can't wait to see how well we all do.
Lastly, BLOGS. Same again this week. 5 blogs. 2 personal, 1 Google reader (linked!!), 1 tech and one on the project. You should all go back to the start of the year and look at your early blogs. Compare them with what you do now. HUGE difference. You should all be very proud of yourselves because I know I am. I read all of them, really I do, and often I find myself deep into the articles your share and also find myself laughing at what you are writing about. This is a great process for you and I can see it working. Keep it up, embrace the blog and use it to vent, rant and just talk about whatever it rolling around in your heads. Wonderful work, all of you.
